September 7, 2025. It's Falling
Realizing this may be an unpopular opinion, I think (close enough) it's Fall. The nip in the air may only be a hint, but it's enough for me to have put out the mums, and bring in the fern twins for the upcoming winter. The wreaths on the doors are changed and the deck rugs are power washed and stored. Even Randy has started up the fireplace and broken out the sweatshirts. It's hands down my favorite season.
My beloved Hawkeyes lost this year's annual meeting with the Cyclones, but I do believe they will have a successful season. Both Iowa teams have had great opening games, so this will be fun to keep track of both with their exceptional quarterbacks. I'm holding out hope that, in spite of our Iowa heroine, Caitlin Clark being out for the duration of their season, the Fever will advance in the playoffs. And don't forget about our Kate Martin; the Valkaries are also making their mark! The naysayers better watch out for these women in 2026! Lastly, but most importantly, our Grand2 is playing guard for the 8th grade E'Hawks, with games beginning next week. This group of boys has so much potential, and I for one, am excited to see how they do.
We did suffer the loss of a dear friend this week. He was a fun member of Randy's "Water Board", a group of men who would gather daily in the shop, pull a bottle of water (or whatever) from the fridge to discuss the world's woes. Joe added his Irish wit and humor to each conversation. I certainly will miss his "well hello, Lovely" if I happened to walk in. As I type, Randy is helping to get one of his tractors running for his service. John Deere was a common denominator in their relationship. He will be sorely missed.
The second of our family's weddings is this month, with the last of 3 coming up in October. I don't remember the last time my family has gathered so many times in a year. I'm looking forward to getting dressed up and celebrating.
My happy place time in the yard has been abbreviated as the grass growth has slowed measurably, no pun intended. The leaf blower will get more time running than the mower. This just gives me more happy place time in the kitchen, a true silver lining. Pies, soups and the ever-present cookies and bread; the heavenly scents.
And finally, I've decided I need to abandon my baggy jeans and tee shirt with a messy bun look for a more intentional appearance. I'm laughing inside over this, as I have no idea how long I'll be able to keep it up. It may just add up to be pulling a denim jacket over that tee. I did sell my ill-fitting jeans. I mean, no one should be hanging onto pants that can be pulled off without unzipping. The "boyfriend" style looks more like "homeless" on me. Keep in mind that, as I sit here, I'm sporting a pair of leggings, a big sweatshirt, and my slippers with a ponytail. But, hey, it's early.
I always feel renewed with a change in the season. ☘
