March 15, 2026 Post-St. Pat's
I'm burrowed under a blanket, still in my Ireland sweatshirt and Hawkeye sleep pants, watching it blow and snow, nursing another cup of coffee. My brother and his family, as well as our friends, all left early yesterday to miss the inclement weather. Even though churches have been cancelled, the Kiwanis Club is still at the VFW, flipping cakes for those needing a hot breakfast. Something tells me Randy will be home earlier than usual.
I try to take advantage of these quiet solitary mornings, so my plan is to give myself a facial, and perhaps, a coat of polish on my stubby nails. It never fails that when I do a self-care day that I think of Dolly Parton in Steel Magnolias: "There is no such thing as natural beauty. It takes a lot of work to look like this". I honestly don't put in a lot of effort, but do have a skincare routine. Makeup is more minimal now that I'm not going to work every day. In fact, a swipe of mascara, touch of blush, and lip balm keep me from being mistaken for one of my brothers... and that's on a good day.
Sunday is when I have my attitude of gratitude with God. I try to visit every day, but make a point of keeping Sunday positive. Church is far too people-y for me, but I'm not above a quiet moment in a pew.
Finally, to put a pin in the retirement issue. We have heard from so many that are not thrilled about Randy no longer being available. Funny how none of those say anything directly to us, it's always someone else who tells us. We are finding it hard to get excited about some freedom and rest when there are those who are not happy for us. I hope this explains our reticence in having an open house to celebrate. So, we will go quietly into the good night...no fanfare.
Team USA women's basketball plays this afternoon, so I"ll have my serum-soaked skin focused on that. It's a healthy reprieve from all the unrest in the country, this March Madness. We are loving it.
As usual, my plea to pray for our country. ☘
